Word searches have long been a favourite pastime for good reason. Sitting down with a fresh puzzle is a calming, screen-free activity that challenges your focus and vocabulary at a comfortable pace. Whether you enjoy them with your morning coffee, share them with grandchildren, or keep a stack on the coffee table for guests, a word search is a simple pleasure that's easy to pick up and put down again.

Our Large Print option makes the puzzle accessible to anyone who finds small text tiring — no squinting, no magnifying glass needed. And because you can choose themes like Gardening, Sewing & Crafts, or Old-Time Music, every puzzle can feel personal.

How to make your word search

  1. Pick a theme or enter your own words. Choose one of the 12 built-in themes, or switch to "My own words" and type up to 25 words of your choosing — one per line.
  2. Set the grid size and difficulty. A 10 × 10 grid is cosy; a 15 × 15 grid gives you a longer challenge. Easy mode hides words only across and down; Hard mode adds diagonals and backwards words.
  3. Turn on Large Print if you'd like bigger letters. It's on by default — just toggle it off if you prefer a compact puzzle.
  4. Click "Generate Puzzle." Your word search appears instantly on screen. Hit "New puzzle" for a fresh layout with the same words.
  5. Print. Click the Print button (or your browser's print shortcut). The puzzle prints on page one; the answer key prints automatically on page two.

How the grid is actually built

Every puzzle — theme or custom — runs through the same placement algorithm:

  1. Longest words go first. The word list is sorted from longest to shortest before placement starts, so the words that are hardest to fit get first pick of the grid.
  2. Each word tries up to grid-size² × 4 random spots. On the default 12 × 12 grid that's 576 attempts per word (400 on the smallest 10 × 10 grid; 900 on the largest 15 × 15). A random starting cell and a random allowed direction are picked each attempt, and the placement is accepted only if the word stays inside the grid and every cell along its path is either empty or already holds the matching letter — which is how two words are allowed to cross.
  3. A word that never finds a home is skipped, never dropped silently. It's named in a “Couldn't fit” notice on screen so you know to try a larger grid.
  4. Difficulty sets how many of the 8 compass directions are allowed:
    • Easy — 2 directions: left-to-right and top-to-bottom only.
    • Medium (the default) — 4 directions: adds the two forward diagonals, down-right and up-right.
    • Hard — all 8 directions: adds backwards left-to-right, backwards top-to-bottom, and both backward diagonals.
  5. Every cell left empty afterward is filled with a random capital letter, A through Z chosen with equal probability — that's the “noise” surrounding your hidden words.

Worked example: the built-in Birds theme has 15 words, from WREN at 4 letters up to CHICKADEE at 9 letters — 101 letters in total. On the default 12 × 12 grid (144 cells) at Medium difficulty, that leaves at least 43 cells open for random filler letters, even before any two words happen to cross on a shared letter. Because words are placed longest-first, CHICKADEE claims its 9-letter run across the grid before shorter words like WREN compete for what's left.

Absolutely. Switch from a theme to “My own words,” type one word per line (up to 25 words), and the tool builds a custom grid just for you.
Does it include an answer key?
Yes. Click "Show answer key" on screen to check your work, or when you print the puzzle the answer key automatically prints on a second page.
How many puzzles can I make?
As many as you want. Hit "New puzzle" for a fresh arrangement of the same words, or switch themes and generate again — there's no limit.
