How to use this worksheet generator

  1. Enter the name. Type the child’s name (or any short word or phrase) in the text box. You can also choose whether it appears as typed, all uppercase, or all lowercase.
  2. Set the number of tracing rows. Use the slider to choose between 3 and 10 rows. More rows give more practice; fewer rows fit on the page more easily if the name is long.
  3. Choose letter size. Small works for older children or longer names. Medium is a comfortable default for most preschoolers. Large suits younger learners still developing pencil grip.
  4. Turn on the solid example row if you want a fully drawn first row the child can study before tracing. The remaining rows show dotted outlines to trace over.
  5. Click Print Worksheet. Your browser print dialog opens. Set margins to Default or Normal and print at 100% scale for best results. The controls and page header are hidden automatically — only the worksheet prints.

About the guide lines

Each row uses the classic three-line primary handwriting rule: a solid top line marks the cap-height (where tall letters like “h” and “d” reach), a dashed midline marks the x-height (where letters like “a” and “e” sit), and a solid baseline marks where every letter rests. This layout matches the guide-line style used in most early-grade handwriting programmes in the US, UK, and Australia.

About the dotted tracing letters

The dotted letters are drawn using SVG outlines with a dashed stroke — the same technique used in commercial handwriting workbooks. No special font file is required, so the letters are accurate and consistent for any name. The rounded font stack (similar to “Nunito” or “Comic Sans”) uses letterforms that closely match what children are taught in print-style early handwriting.

Frequently asked questions

What age is name tracing practice for?

Name tracing worksheets are most commonly used with children aged 3 to 6 who are learning to recognise and form the letters in their own name. Preschool and kindergarten programmes often introduce name writing before the full alphabet, because children are highly motivated to learn their own name. The large letter size option on this tool works well for younger children with developing fine-motor skills.

How do I use a name tracing worksheet?

Print the worksheet and give the child a pencil or crayon. Ask them to trace each dotted letter by following the outline from left to right, staying as close to the dots as possible. If you enabled the solid example row, encourage them to look at that row first to see the correct letter shapes. After tracing, you can ask them to try writing the name freely on a blank line or the back of the sheet.

Can I make a worksheet for a longer name or a different phrase?

Yes — the tool accepts any name or short phrase up to around 20 characters. For longer names, selecting Small or Medium letter size gives more room across the page. You can also generate separate sheets for the first and last name if you prefer.

Is this worksheet generator free to use?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, no email address, and no payment required. The worksheet is generated entirely in your browser and printed directly — nothing is stored on any server.

How do the dotted tracing letters work?

The letters are drawn as SVG outlines with a dashed stroke, which creates the dotted-letter effect without needing any special fonts. This works for any name or phrase and prints accurately on standard letter-size paper. The three-line handwriting guides (solid top line, dashed midline, solid baseline) follow the same layout used in most primary-school handwriting programmes.
