How this old-time music puzzle is generated

This page builds the old-time music puzzle automatically as soon as it loads, using the tool's default settings: a 12 × 12 grid (144 cells) at Medium difficulty. Medium hides words in 4 of the generator's 8 possible compass directions — left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and the two forward diagonals (down-right and up-right). Use the controls above to switch to Hard, which adds backwards left-to-right, backwards top-to-bottom, and both backward diagonals, or Easy, which restricts the puzzle to just left-to-right and top-to-bottom.
