Printable Dot Paper — Free Dot Grid Generator

Generate free printable dot grid paper with the spacing, size, and color you prefer. The dots provide a subtle reference grid without heavy lines — ideal for bullet journaling, freehand drawing, and planning layouts. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.

Before printing:

  • In your print dialog, set Scale to 100% (also called "Actual Size" or "None"). Do not use "Fit to page".
  • All measurements in this tool use real millimetres — a 5 mm grid will measure exactly 5 mm on paper when printed correctly.

How to print dot paper

  1. Choose your dot spacing. 5 mm matches most commercial dot-grid notebooks. 7 mm or 10 mm gives more room per dot and suits larger handwriting or children's work.
  2. Adjust dot size. The slider controls the dot radius. Keep it small (0.3–0.5 mm) for subtle dots that guide writing without dominating the page, or increase it if you want the dots to be more visible.
  3. Pick a dot color. The default gray is close to most commercial dot journals. Click the color swatch to choose any color from your browser's color picker.
  4. Select your paper size to match your printer.
  5. Click Print Paper. Set scale to 100% (Actual Size) in the print dialog. Do not use Fit to page.

Why choose dot paper over lined or grid?

Lined paper guides writing in one dimension — left to right, line by line. Grid paper guides in two dimensions but the lines can feel constraining for freehand drawing or layout work. Dot paper strikes a balance: the dots provide a reference in both directions while leaving the space between them visually clear.

For bullet journaling in particular, this matters. A rapid log, a habit tracker, a calendar layout, and a mind map can all share the same dot-grid page because the dots adapt to any structure without imposing one. The dots disappear visually once the page is filled — your content takes centre stage.

Uses for printable dot paper

  • Bullet journaling. The dot grid is the foundational format for bullet journal systems — it provides just enough structure for rapid logging, spreads, and collections without imposing a rigid layout.
  • Sketching and illustration. The subtle grid helps maintain consistent proportions when drawing by hand without the visual clutter of full grid lines.
  • Page layout planning. Designers and teachers often use dot paper to sketch layouts for newsletters, worksheets, or magazine spreads before moving to software.
  • Hand lettering and calligraphy guides. Dots spaced at 5 mm or 7 mm give a reference for consistent letter height and baseline alignment without ruling the page with visible lines.
  • Children's drawing and mathematics. A dot grid is a gentle introduction to coordinates and spatial reasoning — children can connect dots to draw shapes, count squares, or explore patterns.

Frequently asked questions

What is dot paper used for?
Dot paper (also called dot grid paper) is popular for bullet journaling, freehand drawing, and planning layouts. The dots act as a subtle guide without the visual weight of grid lines, so hand-drawn content stands out clearly. It is also used for designing isometric drawings when dots are arranged in a triangular pattern.
What dot spacing should I choose?
5 mm is the standard for bullet journaling and general note-taking — it matches most commercial dot-grid notebooks. 7 mm gives slightly more room and is easier to write on. 10 mm is useful for children or anyone who writes with large letters. 0.25 in (6.35 mm) is close to 7 mm and suits imperial-unit work.
How do I make the dots smaller or larger?
Use the Dot size slider. The default is 0.5 mm, which matches most printed dot journals. Move it toward 'Fine' for less visible dots, or toward 'Bold' for more prominent markers. A larger dot can also serve as a reference point for precise alignment when drawing.
Can I change the dot color?
Yes. Click the color swatch to open your browser's color picker. A light gray (the default) keeps dots subtle. Some people prefer a light blue for a classic notebook feel, or a very pale color to make the dots barely visible — just enough to guide writing.
Will the dots be at the correct physical spacing on paper?
Yes, as long as you print at 100% scale (Actual Size) in your print dialog. The generator uses mm-unit SVG, so 5 mm dot spacing will measure exactly 5 mm between dot centres on the printed page. Do not use 'Fit to page'.
