How to make a word scramble

1. Choose a theme or enter your own words. Pick one of the 12 built-in themes for an instant word list, or switch to "My own words" and type up to 40 words — one per line.
2. Add a title if you like. The default title is the theme name, but you can change it to anything — "Year 3 Spelling Test," "Christmas Party Puzzle," or just "Word Scramble."

Tips for custom word lists

When entering your own words, keep a few things in mind for the best results:

• Longer words are more satisfying to unscramble. Words of 1–2 letters are simply reversed rather than shuffled, and short words with only a couple of distinct letters (like "MOM" or "POP") have very few possible arrangements, so the scrambled version can look almost identical to the original — even though the generator guarantees it's never an exact match. Words of five letters or more tend to work well.
• Use letters only. The generator strips out numbers and punctuation, so enter the word portion only — write SAINT rather than ST. PAUL, for example.
• Mix word lengths for variety. A sheet with all similarly sized words can feel repetitive. Including a mix of short, medium, and longer words adds rhythm and difficulty variation.

How the scramble is generated

The generator treats every word the same way:

1. Words of 1–2 letters are simply reversed — there isn't enough length to shuffle meaningfully.
2. Longer words get a deterministic shuffle. The generator builds a numeric seed from the word's own letters (each character's code multiplied by its position in the word, summed together), then uses that seed to drive a Fisher–Yates shuffle. Because the seed comes from the word itself, the same word always scrambles to the same result — print the same list twice and every scrambled word matches exactly.
3. Each shuffle is checked against the original spelling and re-run — up to 50 times — until it comes out different. In the rare case a word is made of a single repeated letter and never produces a different order, the generator falls back to rotating the first letter to the end of the word.
4. Custom word lists accept up to 40 entries, one per line; anything that isn't a letter (numbers, punctuation, spaces) is stripped out automatically before scrambling.

Worked example: the default Birds theme's first word is ROBIN. Running it through this exact algorithm always produces RNBOI — the same result every time, because the shuffle's seed comes from ROBIN's own letters, not from the clock or a random session. WREN, the shortest word in that same list at 4 letters, scrambles to WENR. Even a 3-letter word with a repeated letter, like MOM, still comes out changed — MOM becomes OMM — because the generator keeps retrying until the result no longer matches the original spelling.
